A fotografia é outro dos meus hobbies e para quem gosta de fotografar, ter uma máquina DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera ) faz com que este hobbie ganhe outra dimensão.
A máquina que comprei é uma Nikon D5000. Para este tipo de máquinas fotográficas existe um mundo de acessórios disponiveis tais como lentes UV, lentes polarizadoras, filtros, lentes macros, etc.
Photography is one of my other hobbies and having a DSLR makes this hobbie grow into a different level.
The camera I have is a Nikon D5000. For this kind of camera there is a world of accessories available like UV lenses, polorised lenses, filters, macro lenses, etc.
Um dos acessórios que comprei quando adquiri a minha Nikon D5000 foi o comando remoto IR ( ML-L3 )para tirar fotografias sem a necessidade de carregar no botão da máquina.
One of the accessories i have bought is a remote IR trigger ( ML-L3 ) to take pictures without the need to press the camera´s button.
Este comando não só é apenas usado quando se pretende tirar fotografias a nós proprios, mas especialmente quando pretendemos tirar fotografias que exijam o mínimo de vibrações, como por exemplo fotografias macro ou noturnas. O sensor IR está situado na frente da máquina, mais precisamente na pega. É um pequeno circulo preto abaixo do disparador.
This remote is not used only when we want to take pictures of our selves but specially when we need to take special shots that require no vibration, for example macro pictures or night time pictures. The IR sensor is the small black circle placed in front of the machine in the handle beneath the trigger button.

This week i needed to use the remote to take a night shot and for my surprise it was not working.
Because I never tested the remote when I bought it, and i even have the plastic battery protection on, I started thinking if it was the remote or the camera’s IR function that was not working.
Uma das primeiras coisas que fiz foi apontar o led de infra-vermelhos do comando para a minha webcam e ver se este acendia.
De facto ele acendia quando premia o botão, o que me deixou mais preocupado pensando que o problema estaria realmente na máquina fotografica.
De seguida pensei em me deslocar até uma loja e pedir a um funcionário para experimentar outro comando para tirar as dúvidas, mas antes, pesquisei na internet se haveria alguma opção extra para activar o sensor IR da máquina.
Para activar o sensor IR na Nikon D5000 basta entrar no menu e nas definições do modo que estamos a utilizar, alteramos o modo de disparo para remoto.
One of the first things i did was point the remote’s IR led at my webcam and see if it would light up.
In fact, the IR led did light up everytime I press the button and that made me start thinking that the problem was in the camera.
I even thought of driving down to a local shop and test a different remote to make sure, but before that I searched the internet if there was another option to activate the camera’s IR trigger that I have missed.
To activate the IR sensor of the Nikon D5000 you just need to enter the picture menu and change the shooting mode to remote.

Quando pesquisava na internet, encontrei uma pagina de alguem que tinha construido um comando remoto e tinha disponibilizado o protocolo que a máquina usa para comunicar via IR.
Everything that was needed to activate the camera’s IR sensor had been done, so something was definitely not working.
While searching the internet, I’ve found a website were someone had build already a remote and posted the Nikon’s IR protocol.
O sinal é de 38Khz e bastante simples de fazer. Sendo assim, decidi pegar num microcontrolador 16F88, num led IR e decidi fazer o meu comando remoto.
Para ter a certeza que o circuito estava a funcionar, programei o microcontrolador para enviar um sinal a cada 5 segundos e ao mesmo tempo acender um led verde para avisar que o sinal tinha sido enviado.
The signal’s frequency is 38Khz and very simple and easy to make. Therefore I decided to pick a 16F88 microcontroller, an IR led and decided to build my own remote.
To make sure the circuit was working I programmed the microcontroller to send an IR signal every 5 seconds and at the same time light up a green led to let me know the signal was being sent.
Ao mesmo tempo, um sinal via RS232 enviava a confirmação e o estado do circuito para o meu computador.
At the same time, a RS232 link with my computer was giving the status on the screen.
Depois de ligada a máquina e configurado o menu para usar o sensor IR, apontei a máquina para o meu circuito e a máquina começou a fotografar.
Nessa altura respirei de alívio ao concluir que a avaria estava no pequeno comando remoto que tinha comprado.
Once the camera turned on and set to use remote, I pointed the camera’s IR sensor to the circuit and it started to take pictures immediately.
At that time I felt a big relief that my camera was ok and that the problem was in the small remote.

A minha primeira foto foi o teste com uma bola de espuma. Queria fotografar a bola a cair num determinado momento da queda.
My first shot was a test with a foam ball. I wanted to try and capture the ball falling at a specific point in time.
Depois de várias tentativas reparei que a máquina, para ser rapida o suficiente para captar a bola no momento exacto, esta teria de estar no modo de focagem manual e com uma velocidade de disparo bastante elevada.
O problema que se tem com velocidades elevadas é a iluminação. Quanto mais curta for a exposição, maior quantidade de luz é necessária para captar a imagem.
After several tries i noticed that the camera has to be fast enough to take the shot at the exact moment, so it has to be set with manual focus and a very high shutter speed.
The problem with using high speeds is that alot of light is needed. The shorter the exposure is, the more light you need to capture the image.
A foto seguinte foi captada com uma velocidade moderada para conseguir captar a bola nas condições de luz que consegui obter naturalmente.
The next Picture was taken with a moderate speed so it would be able to capture the ball with the best natural light conditions I could get at that time.
A bola foi captada, mas ficou com bastante arrastamento.
Fui aumentando a velocidade mas não consegui uma boa foto pois não tinha o ambiente apropriado. Faltava luz, muita luz.
A proxima foto é a prova disso mesmo. Não usei a velocidade ideal ainda, e mesmo assim, tive de recorrer a um programa de edição de imagem para aclarar a imagem para conseguir perceber o que foi revelado.
The ball was captured but with alot of motion.
I keeped increasing the speed but I could not get a clear capture of the ball because I didn’t have the best environment. I was missing a lot of light.
The next picture is the proof of that. It was not taken with the correct speed yet and I even had to use an editing software to bright it up to be able to see the image.
De qualquer forma, o comando para a minha Nikon D5000 foi um sucesso.
Serviu de base para no futuro criar o meu proprio comando usando um microcontrolador bem mais pequeno e também criar um circuito para fotografias de estudio com objectos em movimento e até fotos de vida selvagem.
Anyway, my IR remote Project for my Nikon D5000 was a success.
This prototype will be the base to create a new smaller circuit using a microcontroller with less pins and also to create a project for a studio to make those high speed snapshots, capture wild life, etc
